Schools Where Pupils Sit On Bare Floor To Receive Lectures

People of Ophorigbala community have expressed disdain over lack of qualified teachers and the bad state of schools in their community.
The villagers express their dissatisfaction when Naij.com visited the community recently.

There are two schools in Ophorigbala community; Ophorigbala Mixed Secondary School and Taku Primary School.

The primary school founded in July 1943 was named after the hunter who discovered the village. Since it was founded, there has not been any major repair of facilities in the school.

The buildings and facilities in both schools are totally damaged while the students/ pupils receive lecture in an inconducive environment.

Naij.com during its visit to the schools discovered that the water taps and reservoir installed in both schools are damaged. Hence, the students depend on unhygienic well water.
The stinking and the dirty states of the school pit toilets are highly nauseating and constitute great health hazards.

Due to the bad state of the major access road to the village, most of the teachers had stopped coming to teach in the schools. Few of the teachers who chose to resume often go through the unpalatable rigour of accessing the schools by either by trekking or through local canoe.
The pupils/students are at the mercy of few unqualified teachers who reside in the community.

When Naij.com visited the school, we leant the head teacher has not be in school. The dirty state of the head teacher’s office showed no had resumed in the office in recent times. Perhaps,  he was deterred by the sorry state of the access road.

Edeme-Okonye Emmanuel, the principal of Ogborigbala Mixed Secondary School said the school lack a lot of facilities.
” The school needs a lot of facilities starting from water. We drink well water. The school has no examination hall, no chairs. We need more teachers. We have seven teachers handling the school including me”

”I personally pay one of the community teachers to help the situation. I know the road is bad but we can’t stop teaching children. The last time I complained, I was told to leave the school but I want to develop this place,” he vowed.

The leadership of the community however, call on the Delta state government to address the situation.
Ophorigbala village is located in Ugheli South Local Government Area of Delta state.The village shares boundary with Burutu Local Government Area; a channel of the River Niger, 20 miles (32 km) upstream from the Bight of Benin.
